My Hero, My Dad

I can't remember a time in my life that Dad wasn't my hero. I have always thought that his example was worth living up to, always believed that he was worthy of more respect than I could show, and always known that only Jesus had a better Dad than me.

It may sound strange, but I don't remember much about Dad until we lived in SC. More than likely he was working or deployed, but I know he had to have been around, after all, Mom couldn't have the rest of you by herself!

Dad was to be feared, and I did. Dad was to be obeyed, and I did, most of the time. Dad was to be honored, and I hope I have and will always make him feel as wonderful as he is worth.

As I grew up, nothing meant more to me than pleasing Dad. That became a driving obsession at one point, a motivating factor through the bulk of my life, and something that today still gives me great joy. But more important than pleasing him was not disappointing him. I know I have not always done what Dad thought I should or would have liked me to do, but I hope that I have made you proud overall.

Over the past 20 years Dad and I have developed something I always thought was lacking, a relationship, actually, we have become friends. I am so blessed to have been given the dad I have, and I thank God at every thought of you. Love ya Pop.

Poppa's Love

There were times I thought you just didn't care
But at least I thought you were always fair
If someone didn't own up to it we would all get wooped
No matter how guilty one of us looked
there were times you ruled with a heavy hand
Now that I'm a dad it is easier to understand
My 3 kids can put me right to the test
Now looking at us 7 I know that you knew best

You always seemed to know when one of us needed flubbing
all of us knew that was Pop's special kind of loving
If may have come with a pinch or bear hug
Maybe you would grab us and give a scruffy face rub
For me it was a special love that you shared
It was the way that I knew that you cared

Thinking of now and though we're far apart
I can't think of a time when you were closer to my heart
Life has there ups and downs and from them we can not hide
I'm so glad if I need you'd be right by my side
Oh thingking back on those rough times that we had
None of them matter, I'm just glad your my dad

You know Pappa's love wasn't the warm and fuzzy kind
But now looking back I'm glad that you were mine
It was your love that helped me walk the line
If not for your love I would be doing time
Yes this big old world needs more of your kind of love
There would be less prisoners and a lot fewer drugs
