As we open the discussion on Islam and its presence on the global scene, we should begin with an understanding of what Islam is, it's core belief system, and it's driving goals.
The Birth of Islam
Islam came into existence as a result of "revelations" claimed by Mohammad, an entreprenuer from Mecca. At the age of 26, disillusioned with the culture of his day and seeking for change, Mohammad retreated to the mountains, holed up in a cave, and took on a contemplative life. 14 years later, in 610AD, he emerged a self proclaimed prophet and began preaching his revelations which would go on to become the Qur'an.
Islam's militant message resonated with those of his day in the Arab world and resulted in an army being raised up under Mohammad which would go on to conquer his foes and force those who did not believe into submission.
At the age of 62 in Medina, Mohammad fell ill and died.
The Qur'an
Considered the holy scriptures of Islam, the Qur'an is a collection of the sayings, adages, sermons, and statements attributed to Mohammad. These writings reflect the evolution of the thinking of Mohammad and show an increasingly militant approach to its promulgation.
The Qur'an has no specific arrangement as to topics, but is rather a collection of Mohammad's messages as they were given. It is difficult to find specific guidlines due to its apparent disarray and thus has become depenent on its Imam's to assemble and clarify the message.
Core Beliefs: Six Articles of Faith
1. One God;
2. The angels of God;
3. The books of God, especially the Qur'an;
4. The prophets of God, especially Muhammad;
5. The Day of Judgment (or the afterlife); and
6. The supremacy of God's will (or predestination).
Standing in regard to Islam
Adherents to Isalm are all innocent and those who are not believers (infidels) in Islam are all guilty.
All infidels are to be pressed to become believers by any means necessary, those who refuse are to be killed.
It is both acceptable and encouraged to use and abuse anyone who is an infidel, for there is no infidel who is not guilty and thus deserving of death. _________________ "If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world" -C.S. As if on cue, Al-Zawahri announced yesterday that Al Qeida has not killed any innocents. From the statements of Islam we see how he could say that, "there is no infidel who is not guilty." Interesting that he goes on to say, "if we have killed innocents it was not intentional or it could not be avoided." Is there any way, other than biblical extermination, to deal with these guys?
